Not many people know this, that according to legend, a sage named Vashishta performed penance in the area. He was in conflict with another sage, who tried to disrupt his meditation by sending a demon named Arbuda. To save the sage, Lord Shiva intervened and defeated the demon, leading to the place being called "Abu," meaning "the mountain of the sage."
What a story! Shiva, in the whole world is worshipped in Linga structure. But only in this temple, Shiva’s toe print is prayed which is to be believed a natural occurring structure. Now the interesting part is the 4 statues standing outside of Nandis (the sacred vehicle of Lord Shiva) , made out of alloys of Gold, Silver, Metal and quartz. These statues are believed to release un unlimited streak of bees whenever an invader would dare to touch the temple!
